The Zephyrus line has shown that powerful gaming laptops do not need to be large and bulky, and instead can challenge Ultrabooks in the style department and this model is no different.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is one of the best Asus laptops we've had the pleasure of testing, and it comes with the new Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics with the Max-Q design, configurable up to an RTX 2080 with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, together with an eighth-generation Intel Core i7-8750H processor with an eighth-generation 4.1GHz turbo clock speed and up to 24GB of RAM, and now we have one in our hands to test it properly.

Price and availability.

As with previous Zephyrus gaming laptops, the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is not a cheap device. With this level of performance combined with such a slim design, the high price of the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 shouldn't come as a big surprise, but it cannot be denied that this is a gaming laptop aimed at enthusiasts with deep pockets.
The price of the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 starts at $ 3,299.99 (£ 3,299.99, approximately AU $ 4,600), and this will provide you with a model with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card, Intel Core i7-8750H processor, 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD and a 17.3-inch and 1080p screen with Nvidia G-Sync.

Here is the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 configuration sent to TechRadar for review:
CPU: 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-8750H (hexa-core, 9MB cache, up to 4.1GHz)
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q (8GB GDDR6 VRAM); Intel UHD Graphics 630
RAM: 24GB DDR4 (2,666MHz)
Screen: 17.3-inch, Full HD (1,920x1,080) IPS, Pantone Validated (144Hz refresh rate with Nvidia G-Sync)
Storage: 1TB M.2 PCIe x4 SSD

Connectivity: 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0
Camera: Full HD webcam (1080p, 60fps)
Weight: 5.95 pounds (2.7kg)
Size: 15.7 x 10.7 x 0.7 inches (39.9 x 27.2 x 1.87cm; W x D x H)

There should be other models with different graphics cards, which will reduce the price, and there is the possibility of configuring it with more RAM, which will increase the price. We are following Asus to find exact prices for these different models. However, do not expect them to be radically cheaper.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is available for pre-order now in the USA. And the United Kingdom, with delivery estimates for April 2019. Again, we are chasing Asus about the availability of Australia, but at the time of writing this, you are not able to book it in Australia through the Asus store.
This high price makes it one of the most expensive gaming laptops on the market, although we expect other RTX laptops to be equally expensive when they arise from other manufacturers.

Design

As we mentioned earlier, the range of Asus Zephyrus gaming laptops have been designed to be as thin and light as possible, which makes its larger and bulky competitors look positively compared.
This has continued with the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701, which Asus claims is the most compact 17-inch gaming laptop ever made. The idea is that the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 comes with a 17-inch screen, but its body dimensions are more similar to those found in a 15-inch laptop. With dimensions of 399 x 272 x 18.7 mm, it is approximately 23% smaller and 40% thinner than the average for 17-inch gaming laptops.

Compared to the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, which is a previous generation Zephyrus laptop with a 15.6-inch screen, the dimensions of the Zephyrus S GX701 is only slightly larger, which is impressive considering the larger screen.

This smaller size and the larger screen are possible mainly thanks to the incredibly narrow bezels that surround the screen. Only 6.9 mm thick, the upper and lateral bezels allow a screen-to-body ratio of 81%, which means that there is very little wasted space.

To achieve such a small top bezel, Asus no longer includes a webcam built into the screen. For many people, this will seem valuable compensation for such a thin device. However, if you use a webcam frequently, for example, for video calls or transmissions on Twitch, Asus has found a fairly elegant solution by including a thin external webcam that can be hooked on the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 (or placed on another place), and can be folded to only 17 mm thick when, not in use.
This not only allows the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 to be a thinner device, but it means that Asus can include more technology in the webcam than it would find in an integrated camera, and is capable of recording 1080p images at 60 frames per second.
As with previous Zephyrus laptops, the keyboard is on the front of the laptop's body, which is usually where the trackpad would go on other laptops. This leaves a large space on the back of the keyboard that looks a bit odd if this is your first Zephyrus.

However, this space is used by the Zephyrus S GX701 ROG Active Aerodynamic System (AAS), which helps keep powerful components cool despite the slim design of the laptop. Below the surface are a series of heat sinks and pipes that expel hot air and bring cold air, along with two large fans. To help with the airflow, when you open the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701, the back of the laptop rises from the surface on which it is located. It is an elegant and effective way to keep the laptop cool.
Because the keyboard is right on the front of the laptop, it means that the touch panel cannot go to its traditional place under it. Instead, Asus placed it on the right side of the keyboard, where he would expect to find a numeric keypad on a traditional keyboard. It does not take long to get used to this new location for the touchpad, and for games, you are likely to use a suitable mouse.

The keyboard is located at the front of the body.

The keyboard itself is fine, with large keys and Asus Aura RGB lighting. However, the key travel is very superficial due to the thinness of the laptop. Again, most people will consider this an exchange worthwhile for the slim design, but it means that the keyboard is not as satisfactory as a mechanical keyboard, which now includes many of the competitors of the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701.
A new addition to the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is a small the scroll wheel on the top of the keyboard that can be used to change the volume. It's a nice touch, and it also stands out for the RGB LEDs of the laptop.

The sound is handled by two speakers on each side of the laptop that works with "smart amplifier technology," according to Asus, which means that the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is capable of much more complete sound than the small speakers that They are often integrated into laptops.
Again, according to Asus, this allows the GX701 speakers to handle 2.5 times the volume, 1.6 times the bass and 1.5 times the dynamic range. The speakers are also capable of 7.1 virtual surround sound, which should hopefully mean that they will provide a more immersive experience while playing. We will give the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 adequate proof of its audio capabilities later.

As for ports, the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 comes with a good selection. On the left side is the power connection, an HDMI 2.0b port, a standard USB 3.1 port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 and power supply and a 3.5mm audio jack.

On the right side, there is a USB 3.1 Type-C and two standard USB 3.1 ports. Interestingly, while the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 has a standard DC charger, it can also receive USB-C power. Connecting the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 to a USB-C charger (or power pack) does not charge the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701, as it will not supply enough power for the hungry internal parts of the GX701, but stops the Asus ROG Zephyrus battery of the S GX701 is sold out. It is a good feature that means that if you are without the GX701 DC charger, if you can have a generic USB-C charger in your hands, at least you can still use the laptop.

A new scroll wheel lets you control the audio volume.

You can also use the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 to charge USB-C devices such as smartphones. Again, this is a nice touch, but considering how short the battery life is in gaming laptops, you may not want another device to get precious energy.

Therefore, it is a good distribution of ports, although there is a notable omission: Ethernet LAN. While most people are perfectly satisfied with the wireless networks on their laptops, when it comes to games it may be essential to have a cable connection to ensure a fast and stable experience.
The lack of an Ethernet port is disappointing, and we would have liked to have seen at least one USB-C to Ethernet adapter, considering the price and importance of wired networks for a gaming laptop.

Display

While the components that drive games are the most important considerations when buying a gaming laptop such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701, the quality of the screen takes second place. After all, if the gaming laptop does not have a screen that can do justice to a game's graphics, then it could be paying for the hardware it is not taking full advantage of.
The good news is that Asus has obviously put a lot of care and attention on the screen. As we mentioned earlier, this is a 17-inch screen, which for a gaming laptop is quite large, and comes with a 144Hz refresh rate, which means that the games feel smooth and fluid, while G technology -Sync means that the screen is not broken either.

The response times are 3 ms, which is very good, and there is no noticeable delay between the control of a game and its appearance on the screen and there is no blur that distracts during the fast-paced action.

The screen is also factory calibrated and is validated by Pantone with a 100% sRGB color gamut. Essentially, this means that the screen looks fantastic from the start, but it also means that the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is a viable laptop for digital creatives, such as photographers and video editors, where color accuracy is of paramount importance. With the power behind the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701, it becomes a formidable workstation.

The 1080p resolution is fine for a 17-inch screen, but it means that even with the most recent games, the RTX 2080 is not particularly taxable. Of course, that means that the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 will be ready for the future for many, many years, and if you want to give the RTX 2080 a real workout, you can connect it to an external 4K monitor or TV to see what the GPU It is really capable.
